North Bay Ancestors

Ancestor acknowledgements are an integral part an Ethnic Studies classroom and can provide a grounding ritual.

This slide show contains 24 Northern Californian ancestors whose lives were driven by Ethnic Studies, social justice, or civil rights endeavors. My research for this project began with locating Sonoma County ancestors, but then expanded to include more of Northern California.

Each slide contains information and images about the ancestor.

Mi Loteria

In this project students explore the concept of stereotypes by playing and making their own game of Loteria. The lesson begins with playing the bingo-like Mexican game, students then take a dive into the history colorism and the erasure of afro-mexicanos. Students then reflect upon how stereotypes can create a sense of “other” or “belonging.”

Students made a diptych (two art pieces displayed together) about how sterotypes affect their lives. The first art piece is a loteria card showing a stereotype they have experienced. The second art work is a loteria card showing a symbol for how they would rather be seen by society.
